When Can MLD Help With Leg Swelling?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialised technique designed to support the movement of lymph fluid through the lymphatic system.

MLD may be helpful when leg swelling is related to lymphatic dysfunction or reduced lymphatic drainage, such as:

  • 💚 Lymphoedema – including primary or secondary lymphoedema
  • 🎗️ Swelling following cancer treatment, surgery or lymph node removal
  • 🦵 Post-operative or post-traumatic swelling, when appropriate
  • 💧 Certain types of chronic fluid retention where lymphatic drainage is contributing to the swelling

MLD may help to reduce or manage swelling, improve comfort and support lymphatic flow. It is often most effective when combined with other appropriate treatments, such as compression, movement and skin care.

When MLD May Not Be Appropriate

Not all swelling is caused by a lymphatic problem. Swelling can also be associated with heart, kidney or venous conditions, medication, injury or other medical problems.

If swelling is new, unexplained, sudden or significantly different from usual, it should be medically assessed before treatment.

Do not have MLD and seek urgent medical assessment if you develop sudden swelling in one leg, particularly if it is accompanied by pain, warmth or redness, or if you experience chest pain or sudden breathlessness. These symptoms can require urgent investigation.

The Key Message

MLD isn’t simply a treatment for “swollen legs.” The cause of the swelling matters.

A qualified practitioner should assess whether MLD is appropriate for you and, where necessary, work alongside your GP or other healthcare professional.

When the lymphatic system needs support, MLD can be a valuable part of a personalised approach to managing swelling. 💚
